It’s summer time! ‘Tis the season to visit the beach or the resort not only to relax, but also to relieve us from the summer heat. But how about in the evening when it feels like the heat hasn’t left for the day? Well, you can’t sleep in the pool, nor in the seas! You don’t want to drown, now do you? (Transforming into a mermaid (or merman) at night sounds cool, though!) As a result of the hot summer night, you keep on tossing and turning, you can’t decide whether or not you want to put your blanket on, and overall, you just feel uncomfortable. How do you sleep on such occasions? Well, we’ve got 5 tips on how you can sleep soundly during those summer nights!
The Egyptians have been living in the desserts since the beginning of time. Surely, they have some wisdom when it comes to cooling oneself down in the midst of a summer night. Here’s what they do to keep themselves comfortable at night: They sleep with a damp blanket. This method seems to be gaining popularity, meaning it’s worth the shot!
According to lifehacker.com, here's how you do it right:
Wet a sheet or bath towel that is large enough to cover you with cool or cold water, and wring it or run it through the spin cycle on a washing machine until the sheet is quite damp but not dripping wet. Place the dry towel or sheet on your bed underneath your body and use the wet sheet as your blanket. The damp blanket will keep you cool.
2. Use Your Fridge
If damping your bed makes you feel uncomfortable, even by just thinking about it, here's an alternative: Use your refrigerator! Nope, we're not telling you to lie on your refrigerator, open the refrigerator while you sleep for an instant AC (that's going to be expensive!), or to sleep inside it.
Here's how you can keep yourself cool: Put your bed sheets, blanket, and/or pillowcase in zip bags and place them in your fridge an hour before you sleep. After which, you can take them off the fridge and their zip bags to make your bed. With this, you can enjoy cool, dry sheets as you drift away to dream land!
The head and the feet are the hottest part of the body. If they’re not cooled, they can make us feel uncomfortable. (Maybe this is why some people have the habit of covering everything but their feet with a blanket when sleeping.)
Do you know that there are technologies being developed to cool your temperature down to enhance your sleep? One of these is the cooling pillow. It comes in two types: a pillow with cooling gel on it, and the other a mat that you place on top of your regular pillow. It also comes in two forms: the first in gel form, the other, you fill with water.
TheChillow is the ones that I mostly see being recommended online. Good news is, it is also available in the Philippines via online shopping. Other similar alternatives are also availableonline.
If you’re a traditional person, and a thrifty one as well, this one's for you! Generating cool air without using air conditioner is possible with just your trusty ol’ electric fan and a bowl of ice. Just place the bowl of ice in front of your electric fan so that the air from your fan can spread the coolness of the ice in your bedroom. The ice may not last until you wake up in the morning, but it’s enough to make you drift to dream-topia!
