Moving into a new home is an exciting season of one's life! For newlyweds and soon-to-wed couples, there’s a lot of planning and shopping to do. What does your dream bedroom look like? Will you go for Japandi minimalism or do you want it to feel like a plush hotel room? #TeamPuti or dark and moody?

A cozy and comfortable bedroom is essential for a good night’s rest.Every couple should invest in a durable mattress and quality bedding, definitely. It can be hard to find a mattress that can accommodate both of your preferences, but being aware of each other’s needs and sleeping habits can help you arrive at a fair decision. If you are able, testing mattresses together is always a good idea before deciding.

When shopping for bedding, keep in mind our climate. If it’s not extremely hot and humid, it’s cold and rainy. You don’t want to get stuck under a heavy comforter with a person that feels like a furnace or icicle either. Get bedding that’s thermo-regulating, keeping you both cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold, and moisture-wicking, so it doesn’t feel like a swamp under the sheets.

Start out with bamboo bed sheets. They’re mind-bogglingly buttery soft and breathable. The feedback we often get is that it’s harder to get up in the morning because they feel so good, and these days, who doesn’t want a problem like that? Get your sleep on.

Better sleep means better days. You'll know this once you've regularly clocked in those 8 hours every night. Anything less just feels not good enough. And those who have tried bamboo sheets know: once you’ve tried it, there’s no going back to regular ones.

If you want to splurge and treat yourselves (life is short, after all), get yourselves a French linen set, too! They’re woven from 100% French-grown flax, and vintage-washed for that signature laid-back rumpled look.

Rest easy that both bamboo and French linen sheets are free of harmful toxins and chemicals, and are made with sustainable materials. They are hypoallergenic and gentle on your skin, and get softer with every wash. Invest in your sleep.

For some of us, a reading nook and armchair in our bedroom are absolutely necessary. What about a gaming corner? What if he wants to bring in an ugly, large recliner a la Rosita from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.??

This is all even easier to plan now that IKEA is here in the Philippines. Being able to shop for your home essentials online is so convenient. On our wish list is a new bookshelf that will accommodate both (his) sci-fi and business books, and (her) fiction and biographies. Sending each other links to furniture and other home essentials is our current love language.

The entire process of putting together a bedroom you will both enjoy is a great way to get to know each other even better. You’ll learn how to compromise, mix, and represent both your personalities in a single space. And then there’s the rest of the house. Good luck, and have fun
