What are Bamboo Sheets?

Bamboo sheets are made from the fibers of the bamboo plant. These bamboo fibers are long, thin, and fine, that’s why bamboo sheets with lower thread count are comparable to cotton sheets with a higher thread count. With this, Bamboo sheets continue to provide the luxurious and soft feel that feels much like high quality cotton sheets.

*Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch

What are Cotton Sheets?

Cotton is the most commonly used material for making sheets. With lower thread count (200-300), it can feel scratchy and it’s more likely to pill. While those made with higher thread count (400-700) can feel more luxurious and soft to touch. This is where the rule of thumb, “higher thread count means higher quality” comes from.

Egyptian Cotton, is known to be the highest quality among its cotton counterparts. It is finely made therefore, you can get soft set of sheets with a high thread count.

Bamboo Vs. Egyptian Cotton?

Now, let’s take a look at other factors such as Care & Durability, Comfort & Feel, and Price. We will even take a look at the Environmental Impact of both kinds of sheets.

Care & Durability

Both bamboo & Egyptian cotton sheets are known to feel incredibly soft and smooth. They are also considered to be high quality sheets that can last up to 15 years due to the long fibers present in both bamboo and cotton plant. Both types of sheets are made to be resistant to pilling - which oftentimes, could shorten your sheet’s life.

Both bedding also require more care than your common sheets. Mild liquid detergents and a gently cycle is needed in order to maintain the quality of the sheets

Cotton sheets, however, do have a tendency to discolour after years of use as it absorbs sweat from your body while you’re asleep. These yellow stains can be washed out with deep cleaning but some would prefer to throw them for sanitary reasons.

Comfort & Feel

Bamboo Sheets feels silky without it being slippery. It is breathable, lightweight and cooling especially because of its moisture-wicking and thermal-regulating properties. That means bamboo bedding won’t stick on your skin even on warm summer nights. It will continue to move heat away from your body as you sleep.

Like Bamboo, Egyptian Cotton sheets also feel breathable and lightweight. Those with higher thread count also can feel very luxurious and comfortable. It also becomes softer the more you wash it.

Environmental Impact

Bamboo is a very sustainable crop and a fast growing grass. Aside from this, and it requires no fertilizer or agricultural chemicals and it is a self-generating plant.

Cotton, on the other hand, requires more water, pesticides, and harmful chemicals during production. If you want to be more environmentally conscious, you can opt for organic cotton bedding instead of your regular cotton bedding.

Bamboo sheets and Egyptian Cotton sheets have a broad price range. Of course, choosing one over the other would have to depend on your desired level of comfort. If you are looking for sheets that will give you the optimum level of comfort, softness, and coolness, then getting 100% bamboo or 100% Egyptian cotton would be the best.
